Georgia: Pimento Cheese
Sandwich served: April 14, 2013
It’s not everyday you meet a 98 year-old woman via FaceTime. But that’s just how I met my friend Rob’s grandmother, who lives in Albany, Georgia. This amazing woman has eaten a century’s worth of pimento cheese sandwiches, so I was eager to hear what she had to say about my recipe. She nodded as I listed each ingredient, and in the end, gave the recipe her seal of approval.
Rob’s parents – UGA grads born and raised in Albany, GA – were gracious enough to host the Georgia sandwich in their home on the final day of The Masters. As the crowds gathered in Augusta, we gathered in the kitchen. Pimento cheese, sweet tea, pecan pie, and Amen Corner – a perfect Sunday, if you ask me.
Spending the afternoon with Rob’s family was a lovely reminder of why I started this crazy project over a year ago. Sandwiches are delicious, but they also bring people together. Thank you to GanGan, Rob, Tressa, and Walt Green for being the best hosts for Georgia sandwiches!
